CARBON BRUSHES AND BRUSH HOLDERS

OUR GRADES

Carbon brushes are used with brush holders for power transmission in motors or generators where they ensure the electrical current is maintained from stationary to rotating parts.

They can be found in industries such as steel, cement, paper and plastic plants, as well as in energy generation in conventional power plants, wind turbines and hydropower plants.

PRODUCT RANGE/SHAPES

ELECTROGRAPHITE

Electro and synthetic resin bonded graphite brushes

Various cokes, carbon blacks and binders are produced under high pressure and temperature (± 2,600° C)  such as tar, pitch and synthetic resins mixed and formed into electrographite blocks. The area of application for electrographite brushes is very extensive and their most diverse use can be found in industrial and railway engineering. The spectrum ranges from large, stationary machines in heavy industry to small machines. Additional impregnation can have a positive effect on commutation, wear and tear and behaviour under load during use.

Natural graphites and/or electrographites are mixed with curable synthetic resins, pressed and then thermally treated.

The very high specific resistance is ideal for machines with difficult commutation behaviour. Resin-bonded graphite brushes are used in smaller DC machines

METAL GRAPHITE

Metal graphite
brushes

Metal graphite plates are produced when electrolytic copper or silver powder is sintered with graphite and binding agents.

Larger currents can be transmitted in the optimal manner thanks to the different metal content of approx. 25% up to 95%, the low specific resistance and a small, even coefficient of friction. Metal graphite brushes are mostly used in the cement industry on large slip ring machines and also for earthing. However, metal graphite brushes have also been installed on the double-fed asynchronous generators in wind turbines from the very beginning. While the first wind power generators had around 300 - 500 kW, today we have performances of more than 6 MW.

WIND POWER BRUSHES

Wind power
brushes

The importance of renewable energies using wind power is increasing. Many wind farms are currently being built on land and at sea.

Carbon brushes are used in many different applications as electrical contacts for power transmission in wind turbines. Carbon brushes are also used for the generators (power and earthing brushes) as well as for the pitch drives and lightning protection.

As the exclusive contractual partner of SGL Gelter SA, HEXAGON supports generator manufacturers, manufacturers of wind turbines, maintenance and service companies with high-quality carbon brush grades for demanding operating conditions such as low and high humidity/temperatures, salt content, changing load operations, etc.

Take advantage of the benefits we provide:

·  Customised carbon grades for on- and offshore plants

·  Long service life

·  Low maintenance

·  Supplier to well-known generator manufacturers

NATURAL GRAPHITE

Natural graphite brushes

Natural graphite is bound with pitch or synthetic resin, then pressed under pressure and temperature to form natural graphite sheets. Natural graphite brushes are used in power plants in turbo generators with speeds up to 3000 rpm on steel and/or stainless steel slip rings. Their low flexural strength and high peripheral speed means they ensure good contact behaviour.

HARD CARBONS

Hard carbons

Hard carbons are becoming more and more important for linear current transmission because of their extreme hardness and resulting high mechanical load capacity. Areas of application include crane systems, leisure rides and contact strips for pantographs.

BRUSH HOLDER

Carbon brush holder

Carbon brushes are guided and held by brush holders to ensure perfect contact between the carbon brush and the rotating commutator or slip ring.

These include single and tandem pocket brush holders, single to multiple flange brush holders, single and double-leg brush holders,

plug-in brush holders for generators and corresponding accessories such as clamps and brush holder bolts.
